A former Congress MLA and three members of his family were arrested today in connection with the death of his daughter-in-law, whose body was found hanging, police said today.
27-year-old Rekha, who was married to Shadi Ram's son Sudhanshu (30) last year, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her in-law's house yesterday afternoon. However, Rekha's family alleged that their daughter was killed for dowry.
Police today apprehended Shadi Ram, former Congress MLA from Kamla Nagar, his wife Dharamwati, Sudhanshu and the deceased's sister-in-law Maneesha.
"The family was initially detained following a complaint by Rekha's father Ashok Chaudhary, who alleged that Sudhanshu and his family members used to torture Rekha over petty issues and would often demand costly gifts.
"However, after they were interrogated separately and then made to face each other, police decided to put them under arrest under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including dowry death and dowry harassment," said a senior police official.
The case was registered at Keshavpuram police station of north-west Delhi.

Speaking to reporters, Chaudhary said Sudhanshu's family had informed them yesterday afternoon that Rekha had committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.
"We then informed the police and reached the spot. We suspect that Rekha was killed and then hanged by her in-laws," he said.
Police said that Rekha did not leave any suicide note. An SDM level inquiry has already been initiated in the case.
