A former ITBP jawan has been held for allegedly duping about 50 youths of more than Rs 30 lakh after promising them a job in the army, police said today.
Harikrishna Singh Bisht, who was a jawan in Indo Tibetan Border Police before being dismissed on charges of forgery in September last year, was held yesterday after one of the youth he had conned smelt something fishy as he did not find his name in the list of candidates appearing for a pre-recruitment written test here on Sunday.
He shared his apprehension with a family member who works in the army and the matter was reported to the police.
A trap was laid to nab Bisht from a hotel where he had checked in as Captain Bhagwan Singh, SHO Lansdowne Ram Singh Mehata said.
Preliminary interrogation of Bisht revealed that he used to introduce himself, to those he cheated, as a captain and a recruitment officer in Garhwal Rifels of the Indian Army who could help them land a job in the armed forces.
He met about 50 aspirants from Chamoli district who attended a recruitment drive held at Gauchar in March this year and cheated them of over Rs 30 lakh.
