Former Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister "Agri" S S Krishnamurthy, arrested in connection with the alleged suicide of a department official, and lodged in Palayamkottai Central Prison, today moved a local court seeking bail.
The District Principal Sessions Court posted the matter to April 22 for hearing.
Krishnamurthy was arrested on charges on graft and abetting the suicide of the agriculture engineering department Assistant Executive Engineer S Muthukamaraswamy.
He was arrrested on April 4 along with a Chief Engineer in the Agriculture Department, Senthil who too faces similar charges. The former minister was relieved of party post and then dropped from the state cabinet after Muthukumaraswamy ended his life on February 20 and opposition parties took up the issue.
Muthukumarasamy jumped in front of a train after pressure was allegedly exerted on him over recruitment of seven drivers.
Meanwhile, Senthil filed a bail petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court after the sessions court rejected his application last week.
The petitioner said the prosecution case was false. He was not the appointing authority and had nothing to do with the matter. He was working in Chennai while the deceased was in Madurai. Besides, he was suffering from blood pressure and diabetes.
He also said he had nothing to do with the former minister also or acted on his behalf of the Minister nor at any point of time convey anything as alleged or demand any amount as alleged from the deceased or any other person with regard to appointment of drivers.
