"Competitive environment, sedantary lifestyle and lack of exercise are a major cause being chronic back ache and cervical problems among the urban population," Shanker Acharya, spine surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said.
He was addressing a group of people during a health awareness event organised by Kadambini Charitable Trust who had come to register themselves for the Delhi Half Marathon to be held on December 15.
Also, he said often the food one eats leads to infection- borne disease like tuberculosis which may lead to spinal problems and "we tend to ignore it till the the time our upper torso become unmovable".
"Persistent pain and stiffness in the back or shoulders should be consulted with doctors at the earliest," he said adding that with latest technological advancements, surgeries have become easy and people should not be afraid to seek medical aid.
