'The Art of Der Speigel' kicked off in the capital after its exhibitions in its hometown Hamburg to New York, Berlin, Vienna and Shanghai.
Aimed at honouring the artists of these covers, the exhibition showcased 15 of the original 200 pieces of art included in the special edition of the magazine.
The exhibition was inaugurated by German Ambassador Michael Steiner in the presence of Der Spiegel Deputy Editor-in-Chief Martin Doerry.
The 16 selected pieces present evocative covers on issues such as European integration to George Bush's warriors, German political leaders Gerhard Schroeder and Helmut Kohl, commentaries on Albert Einstein, Friedrich Schiller and Immanuel Kant and issues such as Germany's imminent demographic crisis.
Doerry said since its inception in 1947, the magazine has published 3435 cover pages out of which this exhibition presents an exceptional selection.
"Artists from all over the world paint the covers in oil or acrylic and after they reach the Spiegel house in Hamburg, they are edited and published," he said.
