"Education departments should put in tremendous efforts to rectify the situation so that accountability is fixed at various levels and students are motivated to go for quality education," he said.
The problems were many in expansion of higher education in India and these included mushrooming of sub-standard institutions, a dilution in quality and non maintenance of the academic calendar, he said.
Addressing the 60th annual convocation of Kalasalingam University at nearby Krishnan Kovil, he urged universities to be a part of the economy and a partner in the development of the country.
He lauded Kalasalingam university for offering a special B.Tech programme for speech and hearing impaired persons and said it was a unique programme in Asia.
