Congress MP Francisco Sardinha today opposed the Goa government's decision to extend school timings by half-an-hour, saying that this will be like a "punishment" for the students and make them lazy.
"Everybody is doing well (with the current system). This (decision) will not only be a punishment, but you will teach the students to be lazy," Sardinha said here.
In accordance with the provisions of the Right to Education Act, the government had last month extended timings of all state schools to five-and-a-half hours a day.
He argued that the move will turn the intelligent students into a "mischievous" lot, as they will "start disturbing the class during the extra time."
Sardinha said the parents, who had met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, were also against the decision unless there were facilities like playground in the school.
