Party sources said the violence was sequel to district leaders vying with one another for the post of district secretaries.
DMK had trifurcated the district. While the central was headed by a lawyer Rajandran, the west was for one Veerapandi Raja, son of former minister Veerapandi Arumugam and east by Sivalingam.
The sources Raja had made arrangements to celebrate the DMK leader's birthday here. The other group barged into the function venue, destroyed the stage, smashed the chairs and tore up banners, they said.
