The visit by the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, comes 20 days after five hardened criminals escaped from the high security jail and are still at large.
Fadnavis, who arrived here from Mumbai, was on his way to his official residence 'Ramgiri' this morning when he decided to make an unannounced visit to the jail. He was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar and Nagpur Police Commissioner S P Yadav.
The escapees included three accused booked under MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) and a convict of an arms case convict.
After in the incident, the State government had suspended the jail superintendent and three teams have been formed to recapture the prisoners.
Director General of Police (Anti-Corruption Bureau), Praveen Dixit, who earlier served here as Police Commissioner here, is heading a probe into the jail-break.
