Counterfeit currency having a face value of Rs two lakh was seized here from three persons including a couple from Jharkhand, police said today.
The currency in denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, was seized yesterday. Earlier in 2012 also, the arrested trio was caught by Navi Mumbai police for alleged possession of Rs 3 lakh worth fake notes, DCP Crime Branch, Parag Manere told reporters here today.
The trio -- Mubarak alias Sirajul alias Budhva Imtiaz Shaikh, 30 from Sahebganj district of Jharkhand, Marjina Mubarak Shaikh, 27, also from Jharkhand and Bisru alias Bisardi Jardish Shaikh, 42 -- were nabbed from Naupada on a tip-off, he said.
We are now trying to get assistance from the RBI and the Security Press at Nashik to find out as to how these notes had moved into Thane, what was the modus operandi of the gang, and who were supposed to buy these fake notes, the DCP said.
Police suspect that these notes were to be distributed in the current Assembly polls to voters especially tribals who are cheated in the process.
