The alleged kingpin of a gang that used to supply fake medicines abroad has been arrested here with police recovering fake drugs worth Rs 50-60 lakh from the accused.
According to police, Ashok Mittal, 44, a native of Kurukshetra in Haryana, "was heading a gang involved in supplying fake medicine to foreign countries, including the USA, UK and Thailand".
"He was arrested near Kanhaiya Nagar Metro station while delivering a carton containing spurious drugs," said Vijay Singh, DCP of north west Delhi police.
Following the questioning of the accused, a raid was conducted at his godown in Inderlok, leading to the recovery of a big haul of fake medicines, the DCP said.
A total of 22 different kinds of drugs were recovered in the raid, including prohibited medicines used for sleeplessness and pain and sexual stimulants that are very expensive and cannot be obtained without a doctor's prescription.
Police said that the accused and his gang used to receive orders on the internet from foreign countries. His agents in Ludhiana and Agra would then procure generic medicines at cheap prices which were labelled as branded medicines using the packaging of reputed pharmaceutical companies.
The medicines were thereafter sent to customers abroad via courier and speed post, they said, adding that the accused had obtained no drug licence for storage and sale of medicines.
A case has been registered in this connection under the relevant sections of IPC and Drug and Cosmetics Act against Mittal at Keshav Puram police station while raids are being conducted in Punjab and Agra to nab his accomplices, added the officer.
