Jamirul, from Malda in West Bengal and Satywan, a resident of Haryana, were spotted roaming around suspiciously near Gandhi Maidan parking in Kotwali area by a police patrolling team around 1 PM yesterday.
When the policemen followed them, the duo started running. They were, however, caught after a short chase, a senior police officer said.
During frisking, fake currency notes of face value of Rs 60,000 was seized from Jamirul. On frisking Satywan, fake currency notes of face value of Rs 40,000 was seized. All the currency notes were of Rs 2,000 denomination, he said.
A case has been registered against the accused at Kotwali police station, he said.
It is suspected that the counterfeit currency notes were routed from Pakistan or Bangladesh through Malda. A police team will be sent to Malda to trace the route and unearth the whole network, the officer said.
