Family alleges custodial death of theft accused in C'garh

Korba district police superintendent has formed a probe committee following an alleged custodial death of a 37-year-old man arrested for theft, police said today.
Crime branch had arrested Sabbir Devar, Babloo Devar (36), Gangu Devar (25) and Chandan Devar (24), all residents of Bhalpahari village in Kusmunda police stations, in connection with theft of scrap material, senior police officials said.
According to officials, Sabbir became ill in the police custody and died during the treatment at the Korba district hospital yesterday.
However, Sabbir's wife Kumari alleged that her husband and others were arrested on December 19 from Koriya district and he was tortured while in the custody leading to his death.
While the SP formed a three member committee to probe the death, three officers of crime branch, namely sub-inspector Krushnakumar Dhruva and head constables Rakesh Singh and Gunaram Sinha were 'line-attached' (taken off active duty), they added.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has formed a six member fact-finding committee to look into the matter, while the family of the deceased has demanded registered of a case for murder against the concerned police officials.
