In a move to encourage warring couples embroiled in matrimonial disputes to reconcile, the family court felicitated 111 couples who resolved their battle for a divorce, maintenance or custody and decided to stay married.
The felicitation, held yesterday in the family court at suburban Bandra, was presided over by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit Shah, Justice D Y Chandrachud and other judges of the family court.
The couples were given red roses, marking the beginning of a new life.
Chief Justice Shah felicitated the youngest couple present, who were in their 20s, and emphasised that proper and timely mediation could save many marriages broken over minor disputes.
He encouraged holding more such reconciliation programmes and assured to provide more facilities for the family court.
Family court judge Swati Chauhan was the first to organise group reconciliation programmes in April this year where couples would talk about problems faced by them in their matrimonial life.
Justice D Y Chandrachud said judges, lawyers and counsellors of the family court need to have the vision to accommodate the needs of a changing society where women have a very clear identity both before and after marriage.
