The family members of RTI activist Agnes Kharshiing and her aide, Amita Sangma have demanded a CBI probe into the attack on the two women on November 8.
Agnes and Amita were critically injured after they were attacked by a group of 30-40 people, led by suspected coal mafias at Shohshrieh village in East Jaintial Hills district. The incident took place after the duo stopped by to take pictures of coal-laden trucks on the roadside.
The family members said a CBI probe is needed as they alleged that coal mafias in East Jaintia Hills district are "conniving openly" with the district authorities.
"The society has lost faith in a fair investigation or prosecution of the accused persons behind this attack if conducted by the state agencies and hence reiterate our request to your consideration for a time bound investigation by the CBI," said family members of Agnes and Amita in a presentation to the chief minister on Tuesday.
Alleging that the masterminds of the attack are "in open connivance with administration authorities," the family members said "We request your consideration to allow and facilitate the independent investigation to be conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)."
