A tribal farmer from Jawhar taluka here allegedly committed suicide with his family claiming that he was distressed as his loan had not been waived and his crops were damaged, police said today.

Police said that Dhanaji Vika Jangli of Hateri village hung himself to a tree at his farm around 6am today.

Family members told police that he had taken a loan of Rs 42,207 from the Jamsar Vividh Sahakari Sanstha, a cooperative credit society, in 2016 and had failed to repay it as he lost his crops in a pest attack, officials said.

"He had applied for a loan waiver but it was not granted, his family has told police," an official said.

A case of accidental death had been registered and investigations into the reasons behind the farmer's act were underway, the official said.
