A 48-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after he lost gram panchayat elections, police said today.
The deceased -- Appasaheb Gaikwad -- had vowed before residents of his native Virgaon village in Vaijapur tehsil of the district that he would end his life if he lost the elections, police said, adding that the incident took place last evening.
According to police, the panchayat polls were held recently and the results were declared yesterday.
"When Gaikwad lost the polls, some villagers started taunting him and reminded him of his suicide oath. Depressed, he ended life by hanging himself," A P Raitwar, assistant police inspector of Virgaon police station said.
A case has been registered in this connection and further investigation is on.
