Farmer's death due to schizophrenia not crop failure: Assam

The recent death of a farmer in Assam's Nalbari district was due to schizophrenia and not crop failure as reported by a section of the media, the Assam government said today, quoting an administrative probe report.
The inquiry conducted by Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Om Prakash into the death of farmer Dibakar Kalita of Tihu states that he took the extreme step due to schizophrenia and not due to crop failure as reported by a section of the media, the government said in an official release issued here.
Kalita had allegedly committed suicide on October 18.
The report submitted by the Nalbari Deputy Commissioner to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi stated that the statements from officials, the deceased's brother, Village Defence Party (VDP) Secretary and others, brought to the fore that Kalita was suffering from depression/schizophrenia.
The deceased was suffering from depression/schizophrenia and was undergoing treatment and medication since past 15 years.
The inquiry was conducted by the Deputy Commissioner on the directive of Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister M G V K Bhanu, the release added.
