Several farmers unions today decided to launch indefinite protest against the SAD-BJP government in Punjab from September 5 in support of their demands including debt waiver and compensation to families of farmers who committed suicide.
Kirti Kisan Union President Hardev Singh Sandhu said the indefinite protest will start from September 5 at Matka Chowk in Chandigarh to press the state government to accept their demands.
Leaders of various farmer unions criticised the present government at the Centre for not addressing the long pending issues of farmers.
They also lashed out at Parkash Singh Badal government in the state, alleging that number of farmers suicides have increased during SAD-BJP regime as the regime "failed" to address farmers' concerns.
Sandhu said there should be a debt waiver for farmers and farm labour. Besides this, compensation of Rs 5 lakh be given and one government job to the families of farmers who ended their lives, release of pending tubewell connections, 24-hour supply to the farm sector, he said.
The meeting was attended by Buta Singh Burjgill of BKU (Dakonda), Jhanda Singh Jethuke of BKU (Ugrahan), Chhinder Singh of BKU (Krantikari) and Jasvir Singh of Azad Kisan Sangharsh Committee.
