The 'Pusa Farmers Mall' set up by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) aims to facilate a marketing platform to farmers for selling their produce directly and increase income of growers.
Processed food items like atta, roasted soya, soya tofu, pickles, and packed fresh vegetables and fruits will be sold at the three storey mall, said IARI Director H S Gupta.
Farmers will be allocated stores on a weekly basis similar to 'Dilli Haat model. A minimum fee for electricity and water will be charged from them, he added.
Inaugurating the shopping mall, BJP MP from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath said that such malls are need of the hour as farmers are not getting the right price for their produce.
"About 60 per cent of population is dependent on agriculture and they are compelled to commit suicide mainly because they are not getting the right price for their produce. Farmers are not getting marketing platform. The mall is a good iniative," he said.
