Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda, who was on a fast for the last five days in a jail here, was admitted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital today as his condition worsened.
"Panda was shifted to the medical college for further treatment as per the advice of the doctors in the jail," said senior superintendent, circle jail, Raghunath Majhi.
"The jail doctor was constantly watching his health condition. We have also tried our best to convince him to take food," added jailer R N Roul.
As Sabyasachi, 47, is on fast, it is apprehended that he might have suffered from dehydration and was admitted in the hospital," said Dr Uma Kanta Mishra, after preliminary check- up of Panda's health.
"His body organs are functioning as usual. We hope he will recover in two to three days," Mishra said.
Security in the medical college was strengthened with deployment of additional police force, Berhampur Superintendent of Police Sarthak Sarangi said.
The founder leader of Odisha Maobadi Party (OMP) had began indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday protesting against his solitary confinement in the jail and demanding information on the number of cases pending against him in different police stations.
The Maoist leader was arrested on July 17 last year. He has been lodged in the Berhampur circle jail since then.
