Father, daughter among three held for Rs 2 cr gold smuggling

Three persons, including a father and his daughter, have been arrested at the international airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valuing over Rs two crore.
While the father and daughter had arrived from Doha, another man known to them had boarded a flight from Dubai. They were intercepted at the airport after their arrival here yesterday by customs officials.
Officials did not find anything during their personal checking and baggage examination. However, the officers found gold biscuits in trolleys being used by them to carry their luggage out of the airport, official sources said.
The customs officials recovered 9 gold bars of one kg each and collectively valuing Rs 2.2 crore, they said.
The accused father-daughter duo hails from Ahmedabad while the third man from Mumbai, the sources said.
Another man was arrested from the airport last week for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country 1.2 kg of gold bars.
The accused, a native of Ghaziabad, was intercepted by customs officers after his arrival from Bangkok on January 4. On thorough personal search of the passenger, who was in his early thirties, 16 gold bars were found concealed inside the insoles of the shoes worn by him.
"The recovered gold bars totally weighed 1,220 grams (about 1.2 kg) and was collectively valued at Rs 28.77 lakh," a customs official has said.
