India should have taken the initiative in moving a resolution in UNHRC on the Sri Lanka Tamils issue and its involvement in developmental project in the island nation should be conditional, Left Front partner Forward Bloc said today.
"India should have taken the initiative and brought in a resolution by itself condemning the methods used by Sri Lankan forces against Lankan Tamils and asking for an inquiry into the allegations, instead of making suggestions to the US-sponsored resolution," Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas said.
Biswas' comments came days after the Centre rejected a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly that had asked the government to stop treating Sri Lanka as a friendly nation and slap sanctions while demanding a referendum for a separate Tamil Eelam.
"Dialogue with the Lankan government on this issue must be streamlined and should use all diplomatic efforts to implement the commitments of the Lankan government and India's involvement in developmental projects in education and health needs to be conditional," Biswas demanded.
Biswas announced that the 17th Party Congress of All India Forward Bloc would be held in Chennai from September 2 to September 26, this year.
