Noting that Mamata Banerjee's call for a federal front came "too early", Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav today said alternative political fronts could only happen after the next Lok Sabha elections.
It could only come about after assessing the respective strength and weakness of political parties, he said.
"Mamata Banerjee may have given a call for Federal Front. But it is too early to respond to," he told reporters here.
Yadav echoed what party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav had said yesterday.
During a private visit to the city Mulayam had said, "There are so many prospective political parties in the country which will emerge with new hopes after the next general elections. A federal front with emerging new powers can be discussed only after the next general elections."
After last month's acrimonious parting of ways between the JD(U) and the BJP, Banerjee had voiced the need for all regional parties coming together in a bid to forge a Federal Front before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
"We have enough experience of such alternative fronts. We know that such kind of fronts never see the light of day, because whenever seat adjustments come into the fore, they fail," Yadav said.
Asked about yesterday's meeting between SP leader Sanjay Dalmia and CPI-M veteran Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, he said, "Sanjay Dalmia doesn't belong to our party. SP have no connection with him. We don't know from where such news has come that he belongs to our party. The right to take any decision on an alternative front lies only with our supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.
