The number of farmer suicides declined to 13,754 in 2012, Parliament was informed today.
In 2011, 14,027 farmers had committed suicide, according to the data placed in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Agriculture Tariq Anwar.
The causes of suicides include family problems, illness, property dispute, poverty, dowry dispute, love affair, bankruptcy or sudden change in economic status, fall in social reputation, the minister said in written reply.
The number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra increased to 3,786 in 2012 from 3,337 in the previous year.

The number in Kerala rose to 1,081 in 2012 from 830 in 2011, in Uttar Pradesh it increased to 745 in 2012, from 645 in 2011.
Other states where farmer suicides were higher were Assam, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Odhisa, Sikkim and Delhi.
