Barely 48 hours after the seizure of fake currency notes (FICN) from West Bengal's Malda district on March five, more FICN of face value of Rs one lakh have been seized from the district, police said today.
The seizure of 50 fake currency notes of face value of Rs 2000 each was made from Mohanpur village during a raid last night by a special police team following a tip off.
Three youths all aged about 18 years were apprehended in connection with the incident, the police said adding they confessed that the FICNs were given to them by their Bangladesh agent.
The three are residents of Jainpur village in Baisnabnagar area near the Indo-Bangla border.
On March 4 night fake notes of Rs 92000 also in denominations of Rs 2000 were seized from a man at Rathbari area of the town.
The day before counterfeit currency notes of face value of Rs 2 lakh was seized from Dhulyan in neighbouring Murshidabad district from a resident of Malda district.
Malda has emerged as a corridor for smuggling of counterfeit notes from Bangladesh before being circulated across the country. The business had halted during demonetisation but instances of seizure appear to be on the rise.
A large haul was made in Kolkata too when on March two when five persons were arrested with counterfeit currency notes having face value of over Rs 56,74,000 while trying to purchase a mobile phone in the city's port area.
