Cuban leader Fidel Castro lunched with Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner on the sidelines of a summit of regional leaders, officials said.
The meeting yesterday, at the request of Castro, 87, was for about two hours, an Argentine source said.
Kirchner is in Havana for Tuesday and Wednesday's Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit.
"After exchanging affectionate greetings, the South American president and the Cuban leader discussed regional issues and problems facing mankind such as food security and armed conflicts around the world," the official Cuban news agency Prensa Latina said.
"In a special moment, Fidel Castro and Fernandez (de Kirchner) spoke of the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and his efforts to consolidate Latin American unity with (CELAC's) creation back in 2011," the agency added.
An ally of the Cuban government, Kirchner was the first head of state or government to arrive at the summit hosted by President Raul Castro, 82. Fidel Castro stepped aside during a health crisis in 2006, after leading Cuba for almost five decades.
