Till this forenoon, over 3,500 candidates filed their nomination papers for 1,696 wards, RSEC's public relations officer said.
The total number of nominations were being tabulated and the exact figure would be known later tonight, he said.
Scrutiny of the papers will take place on November 12 and withdrawal of nominations will be allowed till November 14. EVM s will be used in the polls and results will be announced on November 25. Subsequently, the election of municipal chairman and mayors in six corporations will take place on November 26.
Over 63.09 lakh electors will cast their votes at 6,135 polling booths in 1,696 wards. Congress has fielded candidates in most of the 1,696 wards.
No political party has declared any name as probable mayor or chairman since the BJP government recently amended the Municipal Act by dropping the direct election of mayor in Municipal Corprations, and chairman in municipal council and municipal boards.
