CSTPS officials said the conveyor belt which carries coal to Unit 6 (500 MW) caught fire at around 2 pm, possibly due to high ambient temperature of summer. Before it could be brought under control, around 100 meter long conveyor belt and the load of coal on it were gutted.
Nobody was injured.
Thanks to the hydrant lines in the bunker area, the fire could be prevented from spreading into adjoining areas. Chief Engineer R P Burle said though there was no major power generation disruption, machinery/stock worth around Rs 6 lakh were damaged, as per the preliminary estimate.
