A first-ever festival of traditional street performers 'behrupiyas' will be held at the the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts beginning Friday, a statement from the Ministry of Culture said.
The festival will be held from October 5 to 7 where 70 artistes from different states of the country will perform, it said.
Behrupiyas are traditional street performers who portray different characters like animals, gods and demons through dance, drama and music.
This form of art was once popular in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
"The objective of the festival is to revive the very old and extinct art of India, giving people authentic information of this art (especially in the younger class), to increase the respect of people associated with this art," the statement said.
