Fishermen from Ramanathapuram district have decided to go on an indefinite stike from tomorrow, demanding among others the release of 16 of their colleagues from Sri Lankan custody and their boats.
The Rameswaram mechanised boat fishermen met here and charged the Lankan government with trying to implement a Bill against fishermen crossing the borders from India and opposed it strongly, president of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Mechanised Boat Fishermen Association N J Bose said.
Among their five-point charter of demands, the fishermen demanded compensation for the boats that had been in Lankan custody for the past three years.
Stating they had been hit hard by the hike in diesel price, the fishermen said the government of India should withdraw the price hike.
