Fishing by mechanised boats banned

The Fisheries Department has banned fishing by mechanised boats from June 1 to July 31 across the coast of Karnataka to facilitate the breeding of fish during monsoon.
All kinds of trawlers and conventional boats retrofitted with engines with more than 10 HP capacity would be prohibited from venturing into the sea to carry out fishing activities during the period, an official release said.
The use of nets and similar equipment to catch fish had also been banned. The order had been issued as per the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act.
Fishermen and fishing boats violating the ban would be penalised as per the provisions of the Act. They would also become ineligible for getting subsidised diesel for one year, the release said.
