Tamil Nadu Handlooms Minister OS Manian today said the state government was taking steps to construct a new fishing harbour at Vellapallam village in the district at a cost of Rs 132 crore.
Laying the foundation stone for NABARD-funded fish landing centre at Chinnangudi village in Tarangambadi taluk in the district at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore, he said the fisheries department had taken various steps to improve infrastructure facilities in the coastal hamlets of the state.
The Minister said the fish landing centre to be set up at Chinnangudi will benefit over 6,000 fishermen directly and indirectly.
The fish landing centre will have modern facilities, he said adding over 350 fibreglass boats and 200 catamarans could be stationed in the landing centre.
Stating that work on construction of a modern fishing harbour at Tarangambadi a cost of Rs 152 crore was on, the Minister said the government had taken steps to set up a new fishing harbour at Vellapallam at a cost of Rs 132 crore.
In addition, a minor fishing harbour will be constructed at Nambiar Nagar in Nagapattinam at a cost of Rs 34 crore, Manian, who represents Vedaranyam in the assembly, said.
Mayiladuthurai MP Bharathimohan, Poompuhar MLA Paunraj, Joint Director of Fisheries Reena Selvi and Nagapattinam Collector C Sureshkumar were also present.
