Five persons, who were allegedly involved in various cases of cheating by impersonating as CBI officers, have been arrested, Delhi Police said today.
The police has claimed that the accused were members of a gang and primarily used to target women by luring them with fake currency, posing as goldsmith or CBI officers.
By "impersonating" as CBI officers, they used to allegedly deceive women into parting with their ornaments on the pretext of ensuring their safety "in a make-believe crime prone area".
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ishwar Singh said the accused used to deceive women by posing as goldsmith and metallurgists, who are specialised in polishing old ornaments, and flee away with the jewellery on the pretext of cleaning and polishing.
Several jewellery items, seven mobile phones, two fake Id cards of CBI officers, one car and two currency bundles having genuine currency at the top and bottom only have been recovered from the possession of the accused.
The police has arrested -- Surender Kumar, Ramesh, Arjun, Ashok and Rattan Solanki -- and claimed that the gang members have been involved in over 100 cases registered in different areas of Delhi NCR.

Surender is the kingpin of the gang and was previously involved in 10 criminal cases.
The police said that over the past one year, several cases of cheating under hypnotic spell and by impersonation as law enforcement officials were reported in various parts of Delhi after which a team was constituted to nab the accused.
It said that these accused were arrested near a college here on the basis of a tip-off when they were travelling in a car.
The police has claimed that on January 13 this year, they had duped a woman after one of the gang members had approached her on the pretext of asking the route to Ghaziabad and soon, he along with his associates, hypnotised her and parted away with Rs 5,000 cash and a gold ring which she was wearing.
In another such case in Sarojini Nagar here, the accused had allegedly approached a woman posing as CBI officers and convinced her into taking off her ornament by saying that it was a crime prone area.
"Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining members of this gang. Many more cases are expected to be worked out," the police said.
