The ill-fated jeep with 11 passengers returning from pilgrimage to Chandrika dham collided with a truck on the Pratapgarh-Amethi road near Chaura turn this morning, police said.
Besides five people who died on the spot six others, including the driver, were injured of which three are said to be serious, police said, adding, they have been admitted to the district hospital.
Eyewitness accounts have, however, put the toll to eight though the police has confirmed the death of five.
