DSP (Central) Rajendra Datta said police resorted to water cannons to disperse the demonstrators and five people, including two policemen, suffered injuries during the scuffle as the demonstrators tried to move forward.
Former actor and Congress leader Raj Babbar, Youth Congress' all-India president Amrinder Singh Raja Brar, state party chief Birajit Sinha, Leader of Opposition Sudip Roy Barman, Youth Congress' state unit president Sushanta Chowdhury were among those who courted arrest and were freed later.
The Youth Congress six point charter of demands included conducting inquiry by the CBI in all chit fund cases, jobs to unemployed youth and taking action against corrupt officials.
"We have demanded CBI inquiry so that the local party leaders, who are beneficiaries, can not interfere in the investigation process," he said.
Brar further alleged, "the law and order had collapsed in the state and in the Communist-ruled Tripura and the crime rate against women is high.
