The leopard sneaked into a labourer's colony in the Tandu tea garden of Nagrakata block after which people started attacking him with sticks and pelted stones, Officials said.
In defence, the wild animal attacked them and left five injured who have been admitted to a local hospital.
Forest officials were later called in who sent the leopard back into the forest.
