Five labourers killed as flyover collapses in Surat

Five labourers were killed and six others were injured when a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Parle point area of the city this morning, a fire-brigade official said.
"Five persons died in the flyover collapse tragedy, while six others, who sustained critical injuries, are being treated in Surat civil hospital," fire brigade control-room officer said.
The deceased have been identified as Naresh Jagannath (35), Rajendrasingh Sanichar (30), Kharidnar Singh (30), Uditkumar Phooleswar Ram (20) and Videshi Singh (26).
The Medical officer of casualty ward in Surat Civil Hospital, Dr R D Burman, confirmed the death of five labourers.
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner M K Das said that some more people are feared trapped under the debris.
The mishap occurred when the labourers were shifting the columns of the bridge, during which a portion of the flyover fell on them, he said.

The collapsed flyover was a part of the city's cable-wire bridge connecting Parle point area to Adajan near Tapi river. It was being constructed for the last two years.
The SMC has formed a committee to inquire into the incident. "We have ordered filing of an FIR in this tragedy, while an expert committee has also been formed to inquire into the incident," he said.
According to Das, ex-gratia of Rs two lakh each has been announced for the families of the deceased, Rs one lakh for those who sustained permanent disability and Rs 50,000 for other injured.
