Five men awarded life imprisonment in dowry death case

A local court sentenced a man and his four friends to life imprisonment for killing his wife and their infant daughter in a dowry case.
Additional Session Judge (II) Garima Sharma sentenced Lalit Yadav (27), husband of the victim, his friends - Jayant Singh (22), Chandrashekhar (24), Kunj Gond (22) and Sharan Singh (24) to life term and slapped a fine of Rs 11,000 each.
According to Additional Public Prosecutor A K Shrivastav, victim Pushpa (20), a teacher, was subjected to frequent torture by her husband and in-laws since her marriage in April 2009 for failing to meet the demand of a motorcycle as dowry.
On November 13, 2010, Lalit and his friends strangulated Pushpa and his infant daughter to death following which a case was registered against nine persons, the prosecution had told the court.
During hearing yesterday, the judge convicted Lalit and his friends while acquitted the victim's father-in-law Ravindra Yadav (50), mother-in-law Bhogmati Bai (47), brother-in-law Mahesh (28) and sister-in-law Laxmi (24) in the case.
The judge also sentenced the convicts to three years rigorous imprisonment on other charges which will run concurrently along with life imprisonment.
In default of payment of fine, the convicts will further undergo additional imprisonment of 11 months each, Shrivastav said.
