Five young Muslim Thai nationals, who were studying at a madarsa in Pakistan, has been detained from the international airport here for trying to board a Bangkok-bound flight with a pistol and ammunition.
All the five Thai nationals, who are in their early 20s, were studying at a religious school in Swat, a valley of Kyber Pakhtaunkhwah province, and were on their way home for the summer vacation, an intelligence source said.
A handgun and scores of bullets were found in the Thai' luggage as they checked for a Thai Airways flight at Allama Iqbal International Airport here, a security official said.
The Bangkok-bound flight TG-346 was to leave on Monday night when security officials offloaded five suspected passengers.
"A Thai passenger had concealed a pistol and scores of bullets in his luggage. After detecting the weapon and bullets the security forces arrested him and four other suspected passengers who were believed to be his accomplices and handed them over to an intelligence agency for investigation," the official said.
"They are fluent in Urdu language and they are being quizzed whether they made a plan to hijack the Thai plane or smuggle the weapon and bullets to Thailand," he said.
Pakistan has beefed up security at its airports after Taliban militants had attacked the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi in June last year, killing 26 people.
