A special court here Wednesday sentenced a senior Mizoram Civil Service (MCS) officer to five years rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case.
Special judge Thanglian Mang Guite also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Lalrempuii Fanai.
Fanai, when posted as the director of the State Institute of Rural Development, had purchased 150 computers in 2008.
Then anti-corruption watchdog PRISM had submitted a complaint to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on June 25, 2009 against the official alleging corruption in the purchase of computers, following which investigation was launched.
The prosecution said Fanai had purchased computers at the rate of Rs 25,000 each from an Aizawl-based firm but told the company to write in the bills the rate of a computer at Rs 50,000 each.
The official swindled Rs 37.5 lakh in the purchase of the computers, the prosecution added.
The owner of the Aizawl-based firm turned a state approver in the graft case against Fanai.
