The swollen Noa-Dehing river breached the anti-erosion protection wall, built by the Water Resources department last year, on the left bank and tore apart the area between Vijaypur I and II, the sources said.

The turbulent river has rendered the right side of the village inaccessible with 75 families remaining trapped by flood water, they said.

The river has caused extensive damages in the village, washing away 16 dwellings, inundating 59 houses, standing crops, the PMGSY road, and destroying an under-construction PMGSY bridge. It has also drowned the stone crushing machine of a contractor while a number of livestock of the villagers are feared drowned.

Vijaypur middle school has been declared as a temporary relief camp till the situation improves, they said.

The police has been deployed for rescue operation and Rs 2,000 announced as immediate relief for those whose houses were completely washed away, besides distribution of rice, Kerosene oil and mineral water among the victims.

The village is considered the 'Rice bowl of Bordumsa' and the loss of crops would be huge, they said, adding that the the villagers have been directed to shift to safer places.

Though there was no report of any casualty, a sick villager who could not get medication in time due to flooding was taken to Margherita where he died, the sources added.
