The automatic radar system at Kolkata and Baharampur remained functional all along while it was rendered dysfunctional at five other places in the state following failure of the BSNL link from different destinations since morning, the sources said.
Failure of the automatic link affected normal flight operations for about 15 minutes in the morning, sources said adding that the link was restored at around 12 p.M.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) Regional Executive Director S Bhaduri said that the matter was immediately brought to the notice of the BSNL authority which set up an alternative arrangement to control flight operations manually.
Besides alternative arrangements by the BSNL, ATC has several emergency back-ups which are also applied, he said.
As part of this, Very High Frequency (VHF) radio-range are used to ascertain the position of the flights, Bhaduri said.
