A flood alert has been issued to people living on the banks of Bhavani River in Mettupalayam in the district as 6,000 cusecs of water was being released from the Pilloor Dam, officials said today.
With heavy rains being experienced in Coimbatore and neighbouring Nilgiris and other districts, the dam, already full, was receiving 10,000 cusecs of water, they said.
Besides, surplus water from Kunda Dam in nearby Nilgiris district was also being let into Bhavani river and hence there could be possibility of it overflowing, District Collector T N Hariharan said in a statement.
Considering the safety of the dam, authorities were releasing 6,000 cusecs of water through two sluice gates, he said advising people living on the banks to move to safer places.
