Flood situation remains grim in Bihar

The flood situation in Bihar remained grim as heavy rains continued to lash terai regions of neighbouring Nepal, causing damage to crops and dwellings in 14 districts.
The number of deaths in floods remained at 95 as was yesterday, a statement from the state Disaster Management Department said here.
A total of 33 lakh population have been hit by the floods in 14 districts of Bihar, across 78 blocks and 640 panchayats, it said.
The swollen Mahananda, Bakhra, Kankai, Parmar, Koshi rivers have inundated parts of Purnia, Kishanganj, Araria, Darbhanga, Madhepura, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Saharsa, Supual, Gopalganj, East Champaran, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur and Saran districts.

The water level in the Ganga and Ghaghra river has crossed the danger mark in Bhagalpur and Siwan districts, and that in Koshi river in Katihar and Khagaria districts.
While the flood has inundated 5.10 lakh hectare area, crops were damaged in two lakh hectare and the authorities are assessing the quantum of losses, the DMD statement said.

An estimated 352 lakh houses have been damaged in inundation, it said.
The state government has pressed into service 1,491 boats for evacuation of the marooned people while 6.41 lakh have been shifted from flooded areas.
A total of 464 relief camps are functioning in which about 3,86,449 citizens have taken shelter.

Altogether, 224 medical teams have been deployed to treat sick people at relief camps and around flooded areas.
Elaborate arrangements have been made so that food and other relief materials reach the marooned people. NDRF and SDRF have been pressed into service for rescue and relief works, DMD said.

The assessment of damage to agricultural lands and
crops was under process, the state diasaster management department statement said.
As per information available till now, four concrete houses have been partially damaged while 349 huts have been washed away.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as well state Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are helping the administration move people from inundated riverine areas of the Ganga to relief camps.

Civic facilities including separate toilets for men and women, health check-up and cooked food are being provided to marooned people in camps, the statement said.
Bleaching powder and DDT powder are being spread in flooded areas as a precautionary measure against epidemics.
