Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said he would ensure full payment of crop insurance claims to farmers affected by 2012 draught in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu.
"I intend to follow up with up with Agriculture Insurance Corporation to ensure that 100 per cent of the claims of the farmers are released as early as possible," he said in a press statement here.
AIC has about 83.8 per cent of the amount required to satisfy the claim to all the eligible farmers, he said, adding that the balance amount will be released on receipt of the remaining contribution.
The first instalment of National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) claims amounting to Rs 740.80 crore in respect of paddy crop of Tamil Nadu has been approved, he said.
Of this, share of government of India and state government is Rs 303.40 crore each while AIC Rs 134 crore, he added.
This matter was taken up by the Finance Minister after there were representations that AIC had not paid out the insurance amount to the farmers affected by draught in 2012 in Tiruvadanai Taluk of Ramanathapuram.
