Folk artiste arrested on sedition charge
Press Trust of India Tiruchirappalli (TN) A folk artiste, Kovan, was today arrested from his residence here and booked under various IPC sections including 124A (sedition), police said.
Besides sedition charge, police said they had registered cases against him under IPC sections including 153(A) (promoting enmity between different groups) and 502 (sale of printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter).
Police said he was arrested early in the morning but declined to give further details.
Kovan is famous for his folk songs against liquor shops which had been uploaded in social media including Facebook. One of the songs on alcoholism in the state was allegedly critical of the Jayalalithaa government.
The arrest of Kovan, a member of 'Makkal Kalai Ilakiya Kazhagam' (an extreme left cultural organisation) comes in the wake of arrest of students of the "Makkal Athikaram" (People's power - a social revolutionary outfit) which allegedly damaged some Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (state run liquor) outlets recently.
