Describing the passage of the Food Security Bill as an "epoch-making" achievement, he told reporters here that the Centre would spend Rs 1,74,000 crore towards subsidy component to implement the scheme.
"This is globally for the first time that India has brought in the Food Security Act, a landmark legislation, to relieve the poor and other weaker sections of the pangs of hunger," he said.
He said the foundation for a Rs 29.45 crore road over bridge at Arumbathapuram Railway Level Crossing on Puducherry-Villupuram national highway would be laid by Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on September 16.
The Puducherry-Tirupati weekly express train would also be flagged off by Kharge, he said.
