Footboard journy:HC proposes removal of students from institns

The court today proposed that if any student is found travelling on the footboard, the matter may be reported not only to the parent of the concerned student, but also to the Principal of the school/college/educational institution concerned.

"..And if he repeats the same thing for the second or third time, the school may take action for removal of such students, after notice to the parent," a Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam said.

The High Court's order comes a day after it took a suo motu cognizance of a road accident, in which four students travelling on the footboard of a bus were killed here, when they fell down from the vehicle after it was hit by a lorry from rear on December 10.

Yesterday, the court had said, "...It is high time that the Motor Vehicles Rules shall be strictly implemented to secure the safety of the lives of the persons travelling in buses."

The court had cited reports pointing that one person dies in every 10 days in Chennai while travelling on footboard of overcrowded buses or attempting to board or alighting from moving vehicles.

Earlier today, an affidavit filed by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Chennai Police listed out the safety measures taken by the police so far and proposed steps.

Principal Secretary, Transport Department has proposed to augment student special buses plied on routes dominated by educational institutions and to form a committee of transport officials, traffic police and student representatives to give counselling to students on the danger of footboard travel, the affidavit said.

The matter was listed again on January 2 next year, when the Principal Secretary as well as the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) would submit a report regarding the development and progress pursuant to the action proposed to be taken.
