Primarily a right-arm seam bowler, Shahabuddin played 80 first-class matches scoring 2567 runs and taking 248 wickets. He had two first-class tons and 16 five-wicket hauls in a career spanning over 14-years. He has not been picked to play domestic cricket since 2013.
The 36-year-old all-rounder, who made his first-class debut in 1998-99, told PTI that he decided to retire owing to his age and to let young players get a chance to prove themselves. He said he would formally announce his retirement tomorrow. Shahabuddin was also associated with popular IPL franchise Mumbai Indians for a season back in 2010.
In addition to Andhra in the domestic circuit, Shahabuddin went on to play in the now defunct unsanctioned Indian Cricket League, at Mumbai Indians under legendary Sachin Tendulkar's captaincy and also club cricket cricket in England.
His career highlights include seven-wicket hauls against Baroda, Delhi, Karnataka and Hyderabad. In batting, he made a century against Delhi and seven half centuries.
He was the highest wicket-taker in Ranji matches from southern India in 2005-06 season. Recalling some fond memories of his team winning against formidable sides in the domestic matches, he regretted not being able to play at the highest level.
